India-China Standoff: Escalating Tensions with Quad Membership and Hypersonic Missiles

Recently, tensions between India and China have been on the rise. Amid China's expansionist moves and border disputes, India has strengthened its defenses in the northeastern region by joining the US-led Quad and commencing joint military exercises with the US.

India's sudden decision to join the Quad led by the US is a strategic move in response to the standoff with China. India has deployed additional K-9 howitzers along the border with China and is bolstering its border defenses with US support.

In response, the US has pledged support to India in case of war and hopes to deter China by tying up a significant portion of its military along the Indian border. India has regularized joint military exercises with the US, while China continues to bolster its forces in the western theater in preparation for a potential conflict with India.

China's recent test launch of advanced surface-to-air missiles in the Himalayas was seen as a warning to the US and Indian military exercises. In response, India has deployed additional troops along the border and strengthened its defenses with the deployment of the Russian S-400 air defense system, among other measures.

However, clashes between Indian and Chinese forces erupted in December 2022, resulting in casualties. The border dispute between India and China remains unresolved, and China continues to provoke India by securing ports in countries bordering the Indian Ocean.

Sri Lanka, a poor country with tourism and tea cultivation as its main industries, has been hit hard by recent events. The Sri Lankan government's decision to ban the import of chemical fertilizers in 2021 has led to a significant decrease in agricultural production, exacerbated by the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has disrupted tea exports.

Sri Lanka has sought IMF assistance, but it remains entangled in Chinese investments. In response to China's maritime expansion, India is supplying hypersonic missiles called BrahMos to the Philippines.

BrahMos, developed with Russian assistance, will change the military dynamics in the region, particularly for countries like the Philippines lacking adequate anti-ship capabilities. India's actions are aimed at countering China's maritime expansion and have put China on edge, prompting speculation about its potential response.

Short Comments:

"The escalating tension between India and China reflects a simmering standoff between the two nations. China's incursions into the Indian Ocean prompt a robust response from India, indicating the potential for a retaliatory move from China. Additionally, Hyundai's expansion into India is influenced by the presence of Chinese automakers."
